The reuse logic applies to metal as much as to plastic — arguably more, because a stainless tote has decades of service life. The price difference between 304 and 316 stainless can shock buyers new to metal totes. Here is the order-of-magnitude landscape, before customer-specific spec adjustments.

The takeaway is that even at the higher absolute prices, the per-year cost of a metal tote (across its full service life) is competitive with — and often lower than — the per-year cost of a poly tote that gets reconditioned every 18 months. For chemistry that demands metal, the lifecycle math justifies the up-front investment.

Stainless and carbon-steel totes are reconditioned through a different workflow than poly totes: alkaline-acid cycle wash, internal inspection by boroscope for stress corrosion or pitting, gasket and valve service, and exterior cleaning. Cycle time is longer (often two weeks per batch) but the asset life justifies the investment.
For customers with their own stainless tote fleets, we can run them through this process on a contract basis. Talk to us if you have a fleet that has been sitting idle and needs requalification before re-entering service.
Do metal totes ship the same as poly totes? Yes — same pallet footprint, same forklift handling, same 53-foot dry van loading. The main difference is gross weight per pallet, which is higher.
Are metal totes UN-rated? Yes, most carry UN31A or UN31B markings for the relevant material. Confirm the rating against the chemistry you intend to ship.
How long do stainless totes last? Properly maintained 304 stainless totes routinely see 25-30 years of service. 316 stainless totes can exceed that in the right applications. The cage and valve generally fail before the bottle.
Can metal totes be steamed clean? Yes, and many production lines do so. Stainless is the only IBC construction that tolerates steam-in-place reliably.
