Caged Metal vs. Polyethylene IBCs: A Decision Tree

Most buyers default to polyethylene because most products work in polyethylene. The exceptions matter. Here is the decision tree we walk customers through when chemistry could go either way.

Start with chemistry

  • Solvents, low-flash liquids, hydrocarbons? → Metal tote.
  • Aggressive acids (concentrated HNO3, HF, H2SO4 above 50%)? → Metal or specialty poly.
  • Hypochlorite, peroxides, ozone-generating chemistry? → Metal or virgin poly.
  • Everything else? → Reconditioned HDPE is the default.

Then look at temperature

If the product will be heated above 140°F at any point in storage, metal. If steam-jacketed or wash-in-place, metal. HDPE is engineered for ambient and modest excursions, not for thermal processing.

Then look at duration

For long-term static storage (over 18 months), metal extends the asset life dramatically. For short-trip distribution and frequent turnover, HDPE is the right tool.

Then look at sustainability

A stainless tote has a 25-plus year service life. A reconditioned poly tote has a 5-to-10 year service life. Either is enormously more sustainable than single-use packaging — but in terms of total embodied carbon per service year, stainless wins for products where both are technically suitable and the operation can absorb the higher initial outlay.
