In a decade of intake inspections, we have catalogued essentially three modes of IBC bottle failure: stress cracking, UV degradation, and chemical attack. Each has a different signature, a different prevention strategy, and a different cost.

The most common failure mode. Hairline cracks at the cage contact points, typically along the lower side rails. Cause: long-term static load combined with cold-weather brittleness, or impact damage masked by an intact cage.
Prevention: rotate inventory; do not let tanks sit unmoved for years; cap valves so condensation does not freeze inside the bottom drain.
Chalky surface texture, visible color shift toward white, brittleness under impact. Cause: sustained direct sun on uncovered tanks.
Prevention: avoid permanent outdoor storage. UV exposure for normal in-and-out warehouse handling is a non-issue.
Bottle thinning, soft spots, sometimes a slight inward dimple where the product pooled. Cause: product chemistry that exceeded HDPE's long-term compatibility.
Prevention: always cross-reference your product's SDS against published HDPE compatibility tables before specifying an IBC. Most chemistries are fine; the small set that isn't — concentrated nitric acid, certain ketones, some chlorinated solvents — need metal totes.
