Cold-Weather IBC Storage: What Freezes, What Doesn't

Winter shipping season raises questions about cold-weather IBC handling that most product-data sheets do not answer well. Here is the practical guide, based on years of January complaints from customers north of I-80.

What actually freezes

Water-based products with low solute concentration — including certain dilute cleaners, water-based fertilizers, and most rainwater capture inventories — will freeze solid at conventional Midwest winter temperatures. A frozen IBC is not just a thaw problem; the expansion can stress-crack the bottle.

What thickens but does not freeze

Most concentrated chemistries (40%+ active ingredient in water) thicken substantially below freezing but do not solidify. They are recoverable with gentle heat but transfer rates drop dramatically.

Recommended winter practices

  • Move temperature-sensitive inventory indoors before sustained sub-freezing weather.
  • Use insulated tote jackets and IBC heaters for products that must stay in a particular temperature range.
  • For shipping in winter, request enclosed trailers or active-heat lanes for sensitive products.
  • Inspect every tank coming out of cold storage for bottle stress lines before refilling.

Cage and pallet considerations

Galvanized steel cages tolerate freeze cycles indefinitely. Hardwood pallets do not — they absorb moisture, freeze, thaw, and rot. For year-round outdoor storage, specify composite or steel pallets.
